Singing Stone

This is a project developed into three parts.

Starting from my personal experience of visiting the renewed American Museum of Natural History. I used tracing paper, red thread, and drawings to represent my visiting experience in the museum. I tried to visualize my personal experience and transform my physical path into the two-dimensional platform.

After finishing the sketches, I then chose ‘the singing stone’ as the object for this project
- ‘A massive 4.5 ton block of vibrant blue azurite and green malachite from Arizona, now displayed at the museum. The Singing Stone is famous for the high-pitched sounds it made when the humidity changed with the weather and seasons. Now that it is exhibited in a controlled environment, it has stopped singing.’

I experimented with laser printing, transparent paper, and thread to explore whether I could create a collage that brings together the object and its history.
My intention is to provide viewers a new way to perceive The Singing Stone—not only through its original form, but also through the layering of materials and information—thereby inspiring a new approach to presenting collections.

After finishing the collage, the final work incorporates both physical and digital elements.

I printed a map of the Czar Mine—the location where The Singing Stone was discovered—at the same scale as the stone itself (five feet tall / 152 cm). Then projected a video I created onto the map.

The moving molecules respond to the background sound, representing the natural voice of The Singing Stone and illustrating how its form transforms and is reshaped over time by the passing wind in the absence of human intervention. This work explores the transformation of matter through the passage of time.
